The Greater Roanoke Valley Character
Coalition
Thank you, to those of you who have responded to the need we posted in a broadcast email for The Greater Roanoke Valley Character Coalition. To date they still would like to have two more companies to volunteer to do the survey at no cost to your company. Gailen Miles contacted us and asked if we could help by asking our membership. In the email we sent out she said:
"Virginia law has required all schools to teach character since the Fall of 2000. We can' t do
this JUST in the schools. All members of our community, this includes
businesses such as yours, must be involved to have a consistent impact.
This is the purpose of GRVCC, a non-profit coalition of concerned citizens.
The pilot program is an employee survey designed to assess the character/ethics of a company s culture.
Once the pilot program is complete, The Better Business Bureau will pair this assessment
with the Torch Award Application an award in recognition of a company's
ethical practices. For more information about GRVCC visit our web
site: www.valleycharacter.com."
For more information about the pilot program contact Gailen Miles 772-8151. There is no charge for participation.
The mentoring and teaching continues through JA. There are a great number of students in the business class we are teaching at PHHS that would like to have PT summer jobs other than in the fast food restaurants they have worked in. If your company is able to hire students, (some are 18 already and others are under the age of 18) please contact me and I will tell you more about their availability. We hope to help the students who have already had a work experience of some kind. When working with the students we have worked with them on how to fill out applications correctly and we have even done some mock interviews. We have several other topics to cover before school is out for the summer. These are a few of the topics that appeared to be the most interesting to the students:
Work ethic, dress code and anger in the workplace, why their attendance at school is training for attendance in the workplace and many more practical topics.
We hope to bring students to our meetings from time to time so they can tuck the experience way for future reference. Please make a point to make them feel welcome at our meetings, that goes a long way with them - they share it with the class when we work together the next time.
If you would like to know more about the Workforce Readiness Comm. Please feel free to give me a call.

The Roanoke Chapter Sponsors Memberships
In 2004, the Roanoke Chapter will sponsor memberships for several HR Professionals whose employers do not fund their National and Local SHRM memberships. Through these one-year memberships, the Chapter hopes to better serve the community and to reach persons engaged daily in the field of HR who may not currently be participating in the either organization.
Recipients of the Chapter-sponsored memberships will be expected to pay their own fees for the Chapter’s monthly luncheons and other events. They will not be identified to Chapter members as recipients of sponsored memberships.
Persons interested in applying for the one-year membership should submit the following items as soon as possible:
· Letter of interest, describing their current position and the
benefits they hope to receive from National and Local
SHRM membership
· Resume
· Letter of recommendation from their employer that includes
confirmation their memberships will not be employer-paid.
If you’re interested, please contact Barbara Phelps,
Matt Duffy, or
Debra Lovelace. Funds available for this new program are limited, so you are encouraged to act promptly to ensure your request is fully considered.
